160 Years: Unearthing Jamaica's Mineral Wealth- Our Story

It was recognized that Jamaica needed its own research team to provide technical information to support the country's position at the table. In October 1975 Cabinet approved the establishment of the Jamaica Bauxite Institute. In 1976, the bauxite-related research services of the Geological Survey were separated to establish this new public body.

Bauxite

Bauxite is a result of intense leaching in a hot and humid climate with alternating wet and dry seasons and good downward drainage. The climate promotes vegetation that provides organic acids, which help to dissolve rocks in percolating water that carries more soluble components away, leaving only aluminum and also often iron as the least mobile …

Bauxite: The principal ore of aluminum.

Physical Properties of Bauxite. Bauxite is typically a soft material with a hardness of only 1 to 3 on the Mohs scale. It is white to gray to reddish brown with a pisolitic structure, earthy luster and a low specific gravity of between 2.0 and 2.5. These properties are useful for identifying bauxite; however, they have nothing to do with bauxite's value or usefulness.

ARTICLE: Addressing the Challenge of Bauxite Residue

Bauxite ore contains 30-60% aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3). In the Bayer process (Figure 2), the bauxite is digested in a pressure vessel along with a sodium hydroxide solution (caustic soda) at an elevated temperature, which dissolves the aluminum oxide converting it into sodium aluminate, leaving insoluble red mud solids as a by-product.
