Selling for 16 silver coins each, making a Crystal Shard farm is a great way to make passive profit while you progress through the game in other ways. If you want to be particularly efficient, you can use conveyor belts and actuators to quickly harvest mass amounts of these crystals.
It's a nice use of the new conveyor belts but a lot of people already have hoik based setups for item delivery in their farms. If you liked the statue farm aspect of it …

The farm must be built in the caverns layer (the depth meter must indicate "Caverns"). Don't build it underground. The main reason for this is that the ennemies we want to farm only start to spawn when you enter in the cavern layer inside an active snow biome. Avoid building your farm near a granite cave or a marble cave.
The Conveyor Belt (Counter Clockwise) is a block purchasable from the Steampunker at any time for 5 silver. When the player stands on it, it automatically moves them to the left. v1.3.1 Added to the game.
Welcome to Arqade! It may be worthwhile to explain what an item "hoik" is in this answer, as it's not been explained by any of the other answers, and it is certainly an interesting invention. That aside, conveyor belts have certainly been added since this question was posted, and it's definitely worth mentioning them here. Nice answer! –

Before 1.3.1, moving 1-tile high items from right to left with hoiks was not simple, if not possible. Now, with the introduction of the conveyor belt, you can use it to move 1-tile items in the hoik more easily, and in both directions the conveyor belt comes in. This addition is not as useful...

Thus, in order to farm underground desert enemies, you'll need to build your farm in the original underground desert that generated with the world. How the Farm Works: The player moves to the platform at the top and pulls the lever to deactuate the dungeon spike immediately below the platform and activate the 5-second timer to begin alternating the spawn surfaces.
