The Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea, is one of the world's largest epithermal gold deposits with a gold resource of 37 million oz. Open-pit mining commenced at Ladolam in 1997. Epithermal gold mineralization formed at <0.5 Ma and is telped upon a slightly earlier porphyry environment.
Located on Lihir Island in the New Ireland province of Papua New Guinea, the Lihir mine is one of the world's largest gold mining and processing opera-tions. The epithermal sulfide gold deposit was dis-covered in 1983 and mining commenced in 1997. Mining is scheduled to continue until 2023, after which stockpiled ore will be processed until 2040.

Most of the ore is refractory and is treated using pressure oxidation before the gold is recovered by a conventional leach process. Lihir produces gold doré. During the June 2013 financial year, Lihir produced 649,340 ounces of gold. Since production commenced in 1997, the site has produced more than 9 million ounces of gold.
